Overview

Foundation for SMFM/AAOGF Scholarship

Overview: The Foundation for SMFM and the American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Foundation (AAOGF) jointly fund this premier research training grant designed for future academic physician leaders who seek additional scientific training to pave the way for a productive career as a physician-scientist in perinatal biology and medicine.

Eligibility:

  • MFM Fellows

  • Must have earned an M.D. degree

  • Must be eligible for ABOG certification at time of award

  • Must be members of SMFM

  • Applicants in second year of ABOG-approved fellowship may apply for a 3rd research training year
  • Award Details:

  • Total Annual Funding: $120,000 per scholar

  • Duration: 3 consecutive years (renewable annually based on progress)

  • Recipients: 1 per year

  • First Year: Initial award for one year, renewable for two additional consecutive years
  • Focus Areas:

  • Laboratory-based or clinical research

  • Basic or translational research

  • Disease pathobiology

  • Diagnostics

  • Therapeutics

  • Prevention

  • Perinatal biology and medicine
  • What Funds Support:

  • Salary

  • Technical support

  • Supplies

  • Travel to annual fellows' retreat (must set aside sufficient funds)
  • What Funds Do NOT Support:

  • Indirect costs
  • Restrictions:

  • At least 75% of candidate's efforts should be spent in research training and conduct of research

  • Only one year of three funded years may be part of subspecialty fellowship-training program

  • Training must be conducted at same institution for entire funding period

  • Unexpended funds must be returned unless extension is approved

  • Recipients must provide career development follow-up annually and as requested

    1. Description of candidate's qualifications including:
    - Curriculum vitae
    - Bibliography
    - Prior training
    - Past research experience
    - Evidence of completion or expectation of completion of residency training in obstetrics and gynecology prior to award start
    2. Basis for sponsoring department's selection of candidate
    3. Future plans for development and faculty appointments
    4. Co-signatures from both candidate and chair of sponsoring department
