Overview

Purpose To promote continuing education by awarding scholarships for any course of study at institutions of higher education to individuals who demonstrate academic achievement and commitment to community service. Priority may be given to a student with an interest in pursuing an environmental-related career and/or extracurricular participation in an environmental service program is highly recommended. To be a steward of the Lower Appomattox River, the applicant shall be a motivated team player and self-starter with good communication skills. Background The Friends of the Lower Appomattox River (FOLAR) Environmental Stewardship Scholarship Endowment was established in September, 2016 through a generous contribution from the Victor and Reiko Liu Charitable Fund. The vision that drives Environmental Stewardship award is that service and commitment to natural resources conservation are vital to the complete education of our future leaders. Through the establishment of the environmental stewardship scholarship, we will enable talented and committed students to develop as community leaders with the skills necessary to make positive changes to their future communities. Friends of the Lower Appomattox River (FOLAR) is the only organization in the Tri-Cities and surrounding counties dedicated to conserving and protecting the natural, cultural and recreational resources along the Lower Appomattox River. FOLAR has served the region as a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization since 2001 working to develop river stewardship, improve parks, establish trails, access to the river, and protect special places. Criteria Scoring (5 Points) Letters of Recommendation(10 Points) Academics(5 Points) Extracurricular Activities(10 Points) Statement & Essay(10 Points) Priority may be given to a student with an interest in pursuing an environmental-related career(5 Points) Priority may be given to a student who has participated in an environmental service program Procedure The scholarship will be paid directly to the school for current year tuition, fees, books purchased through the institution attended, and on-campus dormitory and meal plan expenses. The scholarship committee will review and evaluate all applications and announce awards each spring. The committee will also review and revise the scholarship policy and criteria as necessary. Academic Transcript(s) (High School or College whichever applies.)FAFSA Submission Summary (which includes the Student Aid Index (SAI): formally known as Expected Family Contribution (EFC). SAI is an eligibility index number used to determine federal student aid and is generated from the completed FAFSA Application.Two Letters of Recommendation (Current) Failure to submit the online application with all documents attached to the application by the deadline will disqualify an applicant from consideration for the Friends of the Lower Appomattox River (FOLAR) Environmental Stewardship Scholarship Endowment. The John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Committee reserves the right to interview applicants in the final stages of selection. The decision of the scholarship committee in all matters regarding scholarships is final. Canvassing a scholarship benefactor, any John Randolph Foundation trustee or employee shall result in immediate disqualification. Scholarship awards are subject to the availability of funds, meeting the criteria as outlined in the guidelines of the individual scholarship program and contingent upon acceptance and enrollment in an approved program. John Randolph Foundation respects the privacy of scholarship applicants. Any personal or financial information will be used for the purpose of assessing the scholarship application and will be made available solely to the Foundation’s staff and scholarship selection committee. The scholarship program is available to seniors and graduates of those High Schools located in the Friends of Lower Appomattox River (FOLAR) service area which includes the Cities ofColonial Heights, Hopewell, and Petersburg and Counties of Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, and Prince George.Scholarship Applicants MustPlan to attend college as a full-time or part-time undergraduate student (at least 6 hours per semester). Priority may be given to a student with an interest in pursuing an environmental-related career and/or extracurricular participation in an environmental service program is highly recommended.Submit a completed John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Application ONLINE to include the required documents which must be uploaded with the application; andMust have a G.P.A. of 3.0 or better.This scholarship award is based on academic record, plan of study, career goals, recommendations and extra-curricular activities without consideration of financial need, sex, race, national origin, or physical disability.
