Overview

Frederick W. Lanchester Prize

Purpose: Awarded for the best contribution to operations research and the management sciences published in English in the past five years.

Eligibility:

  • Book, paper, or group of books or papers must be on an operations research/management science subject

  • Must have been published in one of the preceding five years (i.e., 2022 or more recent for 2026 award)

  • For a group of publications, at least one publication must have been published during the five-year period

  • Must be written in the English language

  • Must have appeared in the open literature

  • Books or papers may be case histories, reports of research representing new results, or primarily synthesis

  • For nominated sets published over more than one year, each element is expected to be part of one continuous effort
  • Evaluation Criteria:

  • Extent to which contribution advances the state of the art of operations research and management sciences

  • Originality of ideas or methods

  • New areas of application it opens up

  • Degree to which existing theory or method is unified or simplified

  • Clarity and excellence of exposition

  • Degree to which contribution provides value for future applications or enables improved practice
  • Award:

  • Prize: $5,000 and commemorative medallion

  • If multiple winners, medallion is struck for each and monetary award is shared equally

  • Each author of an Honorable Mention receives a certificate (no monetary award)

    Application Process

    Required Materials:
    1. A nominating letter specifying the work being nominated and explaining why it deserves the Lanchester Prize
    - Must include titles of paper(s) or book(s), author(s), place and date of publication
    2. Supporting letters (optional but helpful)
    - Statements bearing on the worth of the publication in terms of the six evaluation criteria
    3. Six (6) copies of the work (or electronic version)

    Submission:

  • Submit through the INFORMS Awards program

  • Hard copies (if submitting physical copies) should be sent to INFORMS office address by deadline

  • Hard copies will not be returned

  • Nomination materials must be submitted by June 15, 2026
