Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grants

Overview: Supports apprenticeships pairing master artists with apprentices to preserve and transmit folk and traditional arts knowledge.

Geographic Scope: Finger Lakes region including Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Broome, and Cattaraugus counties.

Funding Source: New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) with support from the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Focus Areas:

  • Indian dance and South Asian classical dance

  • Blacksmithing

  • Finnish-American dance music

  • Hodinöhšo:ni:h pottery and pit firing techniques

  • African step dance

  • Western Plains Pow Wow style dance and dress

  • Folk arts preservation and transmission

  • Master artists with apprentices

  • Pairs of artists (master and apprentice)
