Summary
The Flynn - Captain Dan and Barney Flynn Scholarship honors the legacy of Capt. Dan Flynn, a dedicated lawyer and military judge, and his son, Barney, who tragically lost their lives in 1991. This scholarship is awarded based on merit and financial need to graduating seniors or current college students from Nueces County who are involved in ROTC programs. Eligible applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 and attend designated Coastal Bend institutions.Overview
Purpose: Capt. Flynn, a native of South Dakota, was a respected and loved lawyer in Corpus Christi. He served in the judicial corps of the U.S. Navy for 32 years, the last four as a military judge in Corpus Christi, retiring with the rank of captain. He subsequently served as an assistant district attorney and as a municipal judge. After several years in private practice with Robert Blackmon, he again served as assistant district attorney. After his retirement, he was an active volunteer. Barney Flynn was a freshman at Richard King High School in Corpus Christi. He attained the rank of Black Belt in Tae Kwan Do and played clarinet in the King High School Marching Band. Capt. Flynn and his son, Barney, were killed in a tragic automobile accident on June 11, 1991. Selection is based on merit and financial need.Eligibility
