Floriculture Research Funding

Overview: The American Floral Endowment (AFE) is committed to supporting research that advances the floral industry through innovative solutions to scientific challenges posed by disease, pests, and environmental issues. Research benefits growers and every segment of the industry down to the consumer.

Geographic Scope: United States (university researchers)

Focus Areas - Research Priorities:

  • Increasing shelf life/garden performance

  • Economical means for recycling greenhouse waste

  • Water quality/alkalinity control

  • Evaluation/development of biocontrol methods and management techniques

  • Improving production techniques

  • Plug production techniques

  • Perennial production techniques

  • Production techniques to conserve water and protect groundwater

  • Control of pest problems (thrips, aphids, whitefly, fungus gnats)

  • Control of disease problems (TSWV, botrytis, mildew, pythium)
  • Crop Focus:

  • All floricultural crops including fresh-cut flowers and greens

  • Flowering and foliage potted plants

  • Bedding plants

  • Perennials

  • Projects benefitting any industry segment from grower to consumer
  • Eligibility: University researchers in floriculture and related fields

  • How to Apply

    Application Process

    1. Submission Method: Electronic submission of research proposals

    2. Deadline: August 1 of each year (applications must be fully completed to be considered)

    3. Required Materials:
    - Completed Proposal Application Form
    - Detailed explanation of proposal/research project (not to exceed 10 pages in length)

    4. Grant Administration:
    - Grant duration: One year
    - Renewal requests can be submitted annually
    - Grant recipients are required to electronically submit progress reports twice a year (August 1 and December 1) for AFE Board review at July and January meetings
    - Final reports are published and sent to donors and those who request information

    5. Review Criteria:
    - Evaluation for potential benefit to the industry
    - Alignment with AFE research priorities
    - Each proposal evaluated for benefit to industry (funding requests exceed available funds)
