Overview

First Responder Scholarships

Focus: Educational scholarships for dependents and/or spouses of fallen or disabled first responders

Geographic Scope: United States and U.S. Territories

    Eligibility

  • Spouses and children of fallen or disabled first responders
  • Must provide proof of relation to first responder
  • Must complete first responder service information form
  • For Higher Education students: must provide official transcript showing 2.0 or higher term GPA for two most recent academic terms
  • FAFSA completion strongly encouraged
  • Must attend accredited or state-registered school/program

    Award Details

  • Amount: Up to $5,000 per academic year
  • Payment cap: Not to exceed $2,500 per term (minimum $100 per term)
  • Payment structure: Based on unmet need; if unmet need is less than $2,500, only actual need is disbursed
  • Funds mailed directly to institution — not to awardee
  • Remaining funds may be used in another payment term within same academic year

    What They Fund

  • Higher Education: tuition, fees, on-campus dormitory housing, meal plans, required textbooks
  • Children's Fund (K-12): tuition, most fees, required textbooks, required school uniform pieces

    What They Don't Fund

  • Higher Education: off-campus housing, Greek housing, computers/accessories, special field/certification/license exams, student insurance, previous year charges, parking/transportation passes, sports tickets
  • Children's Fund: curriculum materials (except required textbooks), PTO fees, sports uniforms/fees, music lessons
  • Institutions outside U.S. and U.S. Territories

How to Apply

Application Process

1. Application Window: February 1 – March 31 (annually)
- If March 31 falls on a weekend, deadline extends to close of first business day following

2. Submission Requirements
- All applications submitted through online portal only at fohscholarships.communityforce.com
- Documentation NOT accepted via U.S. mail, fax, email, or phone
- Create one account per applicant
- One account can manage multiple students (separate application required for each child)

3. Required Documentation
- Proof of relation to first responder
- Completed first responder service information form
- School information and accreditation verification
- Official transcripts showing 2.0+ GPA for past two terms (Higher Education)
- FAFSA completion strongly encouraged

4. Multi-Step Process
- Complete and submit application through portal (Feb 1 – Mar 31)
- Award notifications sent mid-July
- Scholarship Acceptance/Check-in 1 opens shortly after award notification
- Scholarship Acceptance/Check-in 1 deadline: September 15
- Submit school invoice/documentation during check-in
- Allow 4-6 weeks for check delivery after check-in submission

5. Important Notes
- Reapply annually if seeking funds
- If school changes after application, update in Scholarship Acceptance section (new school must be vetted before funds sent — delays payment)
- Check status tracked on applicant dashboard under Award Status Information
- Checks issued by Tulsa Community Foundation, not Folds of Honor

6. Payment Timeline
- Award offer notifications: mid-July
- Check printed within 2-3 business days of acceptance
- Mailed via USPS first-class mail
- Expected delivery: 4-6 weeks after check-in submission (if documentation complete)
