Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

Overview: Federal funds available for low-income U.S. Citizens or permanent residents with extreme financial need, intended to supplement the Federal Pell Grant.

Award Amount: $100 to $900 yearly

Geographic Scope: United States (federal program)

Eligibility:

  • Low-income U.S. Citizens or permanent residents

  • Enrolled in eligible curriculum

  • Demonstrate extreme financial need

  • Eligible for maximum Federal Pell Grant (SAI of -1500 or less)

  • Early applicants are prioritized

  • Complete the FAFSA
  • Award Characteristics:

  • Intended to supplement Federal Pell Grant

  • Limited funding available (early application is important)

  • Amount included in excess check on designated check dates

  • Award will appear on student's award letter if approved
  • Disbursement: Funds included in student's excess check on designated check payment dates

    Repayment Policy: Students may be required to repay a percentage of funds if they withdraw, drop out, or are dismissed from all classes prior to completing 60% of the semester. The Financial Aid Office will recalculate eligibility.

    What They Don't Fund:

  • Students with insufficient financial need

  • Only one institution can disburse aid per semester (home vs. host institution rules apply)

  • Late applicants (early application increases chances)

    Application Process

    1. Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
    - Available at StudentAid.gov
    - This is the primary application

    2. Apply Early
    - Early applicants are prioritized for SEOG awards
    - Limited funding is available

    3. Maintain Eligibility
    - Enroll in eligible curriculum program
    - Maintain enrollment status
    - Must be eligible for maximum Pell Grant

    4. Receive Notification
    - Award will appear on financial aid award letter if approved
    - SCC Financial Aid Office awards funds to eligible applicants

    5. Fund Disbursement
    - SEOG funds included in excess check on designated check dates
    - Check disbursement schedule available from Finance Office

    Important Notes:

  • Award is limited and competitive; early application is strongly encouraged

  • Students cannot receive aid from multiple institutions in same semester

  • Withdrawal may affect future financial aid eligibility
