Overview

Early Career Research Grant (ECRG)

Purpose: To provide funding for infectious diseases pharmacotherapy research projects that will contribute to the development of the principal investigator's research career and improve competitiveness for future extramural funding.

Research Focus:

  • Pharmacotherapy issues in prevention, diagnosis, and/or treatment of infectious diseases

  • Encouraged areas: Antimicrobial stewardship, comparative effectiveness, lab-based research (e.g., in vitro modeling)
  • Funding Details:

  • Maximum award: $40,000

  • Total available: $120,000 divided among up to 3 proposals

  • Duration: One (1) year, non-renewable

  • No-cost extension: PI may request; will be considered by Board
  • Geographic Scope: Not specified; appears open to all applicants

    Eligibility - Principal Investigator Requirements:

  • Current Full or Associate Member of SIDP

  • Employed by a non-profit institution

  • Hold a terminal degree (PharmD, PhD, MD, DO, etc.)

  • Recognized as PI at their institution

  • Must be ≤10 years from completion of highest level of training (residency, fellowship, graduate degree)

  • Must not have received NIH or other peer-reviewed federal funding as PI/site PI at time of submission

  • Must not have received cumulative extramural funding of ≥$100,000 as PI from any/all sources

  • Ineligible: Those enrolled in PGY1/PGY2/fellowship during grant period

  • Ineligible: Those who received SIDP Research Grant as PI in past two years

  • Ineligible: SIDP Board of Directors members as PI
  • Restrictions:

  • Grant funds may not be used to fulfill any graduate degree requirements

  • Research Committee members applying as PI will be recused from review

  • Research Committee members applying as Co-Investigator, mentor, or consultant will be recused from review of that proposal
  • 2025 Winners:

  • Greg Phelps, PharmD, PhD - "Amplifying Antimicrobial Action by Exploiting Microbial Resistance" (computational and high-throughput approaches for designing prodrugs targeting multidrug-resistant pathogens)

  • Dan Smelter, PharmD, PhD - "Urinary glycosaminoglycans as a therapeutic biomarker for S. aureus bacteremias" (evaluating biomarkers to guide antibiotic therapy in endovascular infections)
