Overview

Devil Pups Youth Program - Candidate Encampment

Program Type: Youth citizenship and leadership training program

Geographic Scope: California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah

Age Requirements: 14-17 years old as of encampment dates

Program Duration: Held annually at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, near Oceanside, CA

Eligibility Requirements

Must Have:

  • Genuine desire to participate (cannot be compelled or "sent" to camp)

  • Pass Physical Fitness Test (PFT) with minimum score of 175 out of 400 points

  • Current physician's medical exam from a Medical Doctor (MD)

  • Pay minimum $150 attendance fee

  • Obtain transportation from parent/guardian to/from Camp Pendleton

  • Current vaccinations for Tetanus/Diphtheria, Measles, and Polio
  • Cannot Have:

  • Asthma (no exceptions)

  • Any medication for any reason

  • Gang membership

  • Marriage or children/pregnancy

  • History of "cutting," "burning," or self-mutilation

  • Any arrests or convictions

  • Visible tattoos (especially facial or neck tattoos)

  • Piercings (all jewelry must be removed)

  • "Gaged" ears/"plugs"

  • Smoking, vaping, tobacco use, or drug use
  • Physical Fitness Test (PFT) Components:

  • One mile run (must complete without stopping)

  • Planks

  • Push-ups

  • Pull-ups (males: minimum 2) or bent arm hang (females: minimum 15 seconds)

  • Each event scored up to 100 points; minimum 175 total points required
  • Program Structure

    The encampment is held in cooperation with the United States Marine Corps. Each geographic area is assigned a specific quota of participants. Candidates undergo local selection including interviews and PFT administration.

    Selection Process

    Acceptance is determined by the local Liaison Representative (LR). Candidates not accepted may reapply in subsequent years if still age-eligible.

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    The application process must be completed in person.

    1. Registration: Complete registration on the website home page (www.devilpups.com)

    2. LR Assignment: A Liaison Representative (LR) will accept your registration and assist with the application process
    - Over 40 volunteer LRs cover major cities and counties in CA, AZ, NV, and UT
    - Each LR is responsible for recruiting, training, and selecting candidates
    - Each area has a specific quota

    3. Application Materials: Complete paper and electronic forms including:
    - Household information
    - Selection questionnaire (must be completed by candidate only)
    - Health information form
    - Physical examination form (completed by MD)
    - Hold Harmless Agreement (signed by candidate and parent/guardian)
    - Participation Agreement (signed by parent/guardian)

    4. Physical Fitness Test (PFT): Scheduled locally by your LR
    - One mile run (must complete without stopping)
    - Planks (timed)
    - Push-ups
    - Pull-ups (males: minimum 2 required) or bent arm hang (females: minimum 15 seconds required)
    - Minimum score of 175 out of 400 possible points required to pass
    - Candidate must participate in and complete all four events

    5. Interview: Conducted by local LR
