About ASOR

The American Society of Overseas Research (ASOR) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to initiate, encourage, and support research into, and public understanding of, the history and cultures of the Near East and wider Mediterranean world, from the earliest times. ASOR is apolitical and has no religious affiliation.

Grants for Archaeological Projects

In the summer of 2007, ASOR renewed its emphasis on providing funding grants and fellowships that allow individuals to participate in excavations in the Eastern Mediterranean. Since 2007, ASOR has awarded more than $986,000 to 740 researchers and students through scholarships for fieldwork participants, grants for archaeological projects, research fellowships for members, and membership and annual meeting scholarships. The grants below support archaeological projects and project directors.

Denise L. Gold Project Grant

Pending the receipt of funds, one grant of $2,500 will be available this year.

Established in 2017 with annual contributions, the Denise L. Gold Fund was created to support ASOR-affiliated archaeological projects. Gold has been a member of the ASOR family for more than three decades, and she has participated in numerous excavation projects in Israel, including Megiddo and Lachish. She is a faithful attendee at the ASOR Annual Meeting and a generous supporter of ASOR and of archaeology in the greater Mediterranean world.

The Gold Fund provides modest annual grants to worthy field projects that are ASOR-affiliated, particularly to newer and smaller projects, to help them get started, and to discrete components of larger projects that can be completed with an award. Funds may be use to purchase a piece of equipment or to pay for a discrete smaller initiative. The grant also may provide support for off-season research and/or analysis.
