Program Description
DEED offers educational scholarships to support students pursuing careers in public power and the energy industry. Scholarships nurture utility workforce development and introduce students to careers in public power.Scholarship Types
DEED offers four types of scholarships: 1. Educational Scholarships - Financial assistance for students pursuing technical/trade school or college degrees; particularly available for those considering careers as public power lineworkers 2. Student Research Grants - Funding for student research projects 3. Student Internships - Internship funding for students to carry out energy research projects or work at utilities 4. Technical Design Projects - Funding for technical design project work- High school seniors through graduate students
- Accepted or enrolled full-time in: - Technical/trade schools - Accredited colleges and universities
- Considering future careers as public power lineworkers (eligible for educational scholarship option)
Eligibility
Students may apply if you are:Utilities/DEED Members may apply for:
- Deadlines: February 15 and October 15 (two deadlines per year)
- Application Opens: At least two months before each deadline
- Review Process: 12-member DEED board meets in April/May and November/December to vote on applications
- Notification: Applicants are notified of the board's decision by email within ten business days of the board meeting
- Total Timeline: Usually takes two to three months from the application deadline

How to Apply
Application Process for Students
1. Verify Eligibility:
- You are a high school senior through graduate student
- You are accepted or enrolled full-time in a technical/trade school or accredited college/university
- You are interested in a career in public power or the energy industry
2. Choose Scholarship Type:
- Educational Scholarship (for tuition/training assistance)
- Student Research Grant
- Student Internship
- Technical Design Project
- Note: Select "educational scholarship" if pursuing lineworker schooling and training
3. Prepare Application Materials:
- Details on required materials found in the full scholarships application guide ("Learn more about scholarships and how to apply")
4. Submit Online Application:
- Application portal opens at least two months before the deadline
- Submit by February 15 or October 15
5. Board Review: The 12-member DEED board reviews applications at meetings in April/May (for Feb 15 deadline) or November/December (for Oct 15 deadline)
6. Receive Decision: You will be notified by email within ten business days of the board meeting
Application Process for Utilities (Internships/Sponsorships)
1. For Internships:
- Submit application to fund a student internship for energy research or utility work
- If approved, your utility must recruit a student for the internship
- Submit by February 15 or October 15
2. For Student Sponsorships:
- Sponsor a student who has applied directly to DEED
- Your organization must be a DEED member utility
- Submit sponsorship materials with the student's application
- Submit by February 15 or October 15
3. Board Review and Decision: Same process as above
