DC Emerging Retail Initiative Grant Program The Program focuses on supporting emerging businesses to activate vacant spaces, boost economic activity, and provide essential goods and services in underserved commercial areas. Inspired by Vacant to Vibrant, the Program adopts a forward-thinking, temporary-use model that bridges the gap between shared/incubator spaces and permanent brick-and-mortar establishments The Program takes a forward-thinking approach, emphasizing retention and innovation within commercially underserved corridors. It supports projects that foster the long-term sustainability of essential goods and services in these vital retail areas. The objectives of the Program are to: Activate vacant spaces: Support businesses in temporarily occupied and underutilized commercial spaces to bring vibrancy, foot traffic, and economic opportunity to local corridors. Support emerging businesses: Help businesses test their concepts in low-risk retail environments (e.g., pop-ups, stalls, short-term spaces) to develop sustainable models for long-term growth.Foster job creation and retention: Increase full-time employment opportunities within emerging businesses.Deliver essential amenities: Support businesses offering goods and services that meet community needs.Promote commercial sustainability: Encourage capital improvements, customer attraction, and retention through expanded offerings and improved retail spacesEncourage businesses toGradually scale from shared or incubator spaces to permanent locations.Build brand recognition, test products/services, and grow their customer base.Leverage community-focused spaces that support innovation, cultural diversity, and sustainability.
