Geographic Scope: United States
Focus Areas: Family activities and recreation during COVID-19 pandemic
Date Announced: July 27, 2020

Program Description

Emergency grants provided to help families of combat-wounded veterans plan safe recreational activities during COVID-19 restrictions. Due to social distancing concerns, WWFS pivoted from group resort and theme park outings to individualized family activities aligned with each family's needs and goals.

    What They Fund

  • Fishing trips
  • Summer camps (wrestling, martial arts, Jiu-jitsu)
  • Outdoor recreation equipment (pools, basketball hoops)
  • Family-focused activities and experiences
  • Activities supporting mental health and family bonding

    Example Awards

  • Tucker Family: Fishing trip, wrestling camp for oldest daughter, Jiu-jitsu lessons for youngest daughter
  • Stiffarm Family: Above-ground pool and basketball hoop
  • Allen Family: Technology grant for laptop (crossover with technology program)

    Rationale

In response to COVID-19 pandemic, WWFS adapted from large group outings to smaller, family-centered activities that:
  • Provided safe recreation during social distancing
  • Supported mental health and family cohesion
  • Addressed children's loss of school, friends, and normal activities
  • Improved family morale during crisis periods
