This award will be offered again in August 2026. Mission Statement ILA connects research and practice to improve the quality of literacy learning across the globe in ways that are respectful, responsive, and ethical. We advocate for equitable access to literacies among individuals of all ages and diverse communities as a basic human right and a matter of social justice. Constance McCullough International Research Grant | Est. 1995 The International Literacy Association (ILA) Constance McCullough International Research Grant is a US$2,000 grant given biennially to encourage international professional development activities and to assist in the investigation of reading-related problems in countries outside of the United States and Canada. The grant aims to support advocacy, professional development, and emerging global issues.

Eligibility

Applicants’ proposed research must be working toward one of the following goals:Advocacy: Promoting universal access to literacy and providing leadership in support of adequate funding for literacy programs Professional Development: Enhancing and improving professional development of literacy educators—professional development that supports programs and processes in response to expressed needs and that responds quickly to identify professional needsEmerging Global Issues: Identifying and providing leadership on emerging globally significant literacy issues such as access to primary education for all, access to current materials, and assessment of literacy levels There are no restrictions regarding age or setting (preschool, K–12, adult learning centers, etc.). To be eligible, all applicants (including co-applicants) must be ILA members in good standing and maintain active membership through June 30, 2026. Please note that candidates may apply for more than one ILA research grant but are limited to accepting only one research award per year. You must be a member of this organization to apply for this award - become a member.
