Conservation Challenge Platform

Status: Active, ongoing program

Purpose: Decentralized, crowdfunded platform enabling community-led conservation genomics research projects focused on endangered and culturally relevant species in partnership with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities.

Focus Areas:

    Current/Recent Conservation Challenges:
    1. Conservation Challenge #1 - Bermuda Cedar Genome: Fully funded; generating world's first annotated reference genome of critically endangered Bermuda Cedar (Juniperus bermudiana)
    2. Conservation Challenge #2 - Bermuda Cedar Genetic Test: Fundraising ongoing; developing genetic test to distinguish true Bermuda Cedars from hybrids
    3. Antioquia Brushfinch (Montañerito Paisa) Genome: In process
    4. Antpitta (Grallaria genus) Study: In process with ongoing taxonomic research

    Eligibility:

  • Community-based organizations

  • Scientists, bioinformaticians, laboratories, platforms, and biobanks (can apply to participate and receive compensation)
