Overview

Code Blue Projects

Geographic Scope: Alaska statewide, administered regionally through seven EMS regions

Background: Established in the late 1990s by the State Office of EMS and EMS Regions in response to Alaska's rural EMS community crisis due to aging infrastructure. Funded by the State Legislature to provide essential EMS equipment by leveraging limited state dollars with non-traditional funding sources.

Focus Areas: Essential EMS equipment only

  • Ambulances

  • Snow machines and ATVs with patient transport sleds and carts

  • Boats equipped with first responder gear

  • Unique patient transport vehicles

  • Cardiac monitors

  • Radios

  • Oxygen delivery systems

  • Pediatric and training equipment

    • What They Don't Fund: Training and expendable items are not eligible

    How It Works:

  • Requests reviewed and approved at local and regional levels

  • Scrutinized by State's Code Blue Steering Committee (representatives from each of seven EMS regions and State EMS Office)

  • One prioritized list created annually of essential EMS equipment addressing Alaska's most critical needs

    Application Process

    Timeline for Interior Region:

  • Applications available in Fall of every year

  • Due mid-January

    • Required Materials:
    1. Complete the Code Blue Submission Packet which includes:
    - Code Blue Guidelines pamphlet
    - Code Blue Item Assessment table
    - Code Blue Equipment Request form
    - EMS Survey

    Additional Requirements:

  • Review Code Blue Policy Manual for full requirements and guidelines

  • Equipment requests only (training and expendable items ineligible)
