Focus Areas:

• Understanding the mutation in the SBF1 gene and its proteins
• Discovering mechanisms of muscle atrophy and axonal/nerve degeneration
• Developing therapies to stop, slow, or reverse disease processes
• Understanding loss of MTMR5 protein production and its role in nerve/axonal degeneration
• Prioritized projects:
  • Developing CMT4B3 models
  • Validating therapeutic approaches
  • Understanding cell specificity of MTMR5 protein function

Disease Focus: CMT4B3 (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4B3) - all projects must have direct relevance to this rare disease

What They Fund:

• Novel research ideas exploring clinical aspects, therapies, and/or genetic causes of CMT4B3
• Personnel costs
• Materials
• All direct costs

What They Don't Fund:

• Indirect costs (as per foundation bylaws, institutions must waive indirect costs)
• Projects without direct relevance to CMT4B3
• Previously performed projects or work currently being conducted elsewhere

Review Process:

• Rolling basis review
• Scientific Advisory Board evaluation
• Assessment based on: investigator excellence, work plan quality, research environment, translational potential to CMT4B3 treatments
• Quick vetting while ensuring comprehensive review

Proposal Requirements:

• Length: Approximately 6-10 pages (excluding references)
• Must include all mandatory sections listed below

   • Define statistical analyses
   • Justify sample numbers accordingly
5. Preliminary Data
   • Supporting the specific aims and methodology

   • For completion of experimental plan (see example provided)
8. Other Supports
   • Current and pending funding
   • Specify any overlapping support
9. Detailed Budget
   • Personnel costs
   • Materials costs
   • All other direct costs
   • Include justification for each expense (use template provided)
   • Note: Indirect costs should NOT be included; institutions must waive indirect costs per foundation bylaws

Key Requirements

• Project must have direct relevance to CMT4B3 (understanding the disease or unique treatment approach)
• Project must not have been previously performed elsewhere
• Applicant must conduct due diligence to confirm the same work is not currently being conducted in another lab
• Proposals without detailed budget and justification will NOT be considered
