Get to Know Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina Established in 1974, Coastal Community Foundation works to create vibrant communities along South Carolina’s coast by identifying the challenges facing the region and bringing together resources to address them. Coastal Community Foundation is the largest community foundation in South Carolina, managing more than 700 funds established by individuals, families and organizations and awarding tens of millions of dollars in grants and scholarships each year. Charleston First Responders Scholarship Established by donors to honor all first responders who put their lives at risk to protect the lives people of our community, this scholarship supports first responders or the children, step-children, spouse or other living dependent of first responders who have served for at least one year with a fire, police or EMS unit based in and serving Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester counties. “First responder” includes men or women who currently serve (for at least one year) or have retired from service as a volunteer or professional member of a police department, fire department or EMS unit based in and serving Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester counties; or men or women who have lost their lives in the line of duty as a volunteer or professional with a fire, police or EMS unit based in and serving Berkeley, Charleston and/or Dorchester counties.
