Chao Foundation Overview The Ping and Amy Chao Family Foundation was founded in California’s Silicon Valley in 2005 by Ping Chao and his wife Amy. The foundation was established to fund nonprofit and public welfare initiatives that improve children’s health in developing countries; and nurture a spirit of philanthropy among the younger generation in China and of the greater Chinese Diaspora. While the Chao Foundation is based in the Bay Area and has local projects, many of its programs focus on developing countries in East Asia, from China and Cambodia to Vietnam. Other foundation projects are located in NYC, Australia and Canada, demonstrating the foundation’s wide geographical reach. Chao Foundation Grant The Chao Foundation provides more than simple funding to our partners. When you receive a Chao Foundation grant, you not only receive financial resources, but you also receive a wide variety of free services to help your organization thrive and grow. One of our goals is to promote a sustainable long-term NGO culture at home and abroad, and to that end, we seek partners in every sense of the word. Using the Chao Foundation strategy of combining Entrepreneurship, Technology and Partnership, we actively seek to identify organizations whose missions align with ours, and who are willing to work together closely.Eligibility
You can learn more about this opportunity by visiting the funder's website. Organization Eligibility:Be classified as a public charity and tax exempt under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Be primarily independent from government support. We seldom make grants to public agencies or organizations receiving more than 50 percent of their income from government funding. In rare instances, an organization that is ineligible by these criteria may be invited by the Foundation to submit a proposal for a specific project. This might include an organization that is not classified as a 501(c)(3), or a public agency that is conducting a discrete, privately-funded project. These instances are exceptional, and occur only when it has been determined by staff that no other eligible non-profit organization is able to carry out the project.Foreign Applicants: In order for the Foundation to make grants to any charitable organization or group not registered in the United States (US), the Board must determine that the foreign organization applying for a grant would qualify as a public charity in the US.Please contact the Foundation for details on applying for an equivalency affidavit that authenticates an organization’s non-profit standing in the US.The Ping and Amy Chao Family Foundation aims to fund and nurture initiatives improving the health and well-being of children and youth in economically disadvantaged regions throughout the world; promoting the spirit of philanthropy and developing awareness of non-profit practices and opportunities for service for the younger generation of China and the greater Chinese Diaspora.Because of these focuses, the Chao Foundation seeks to fund grants that either:Are run by a member of the Asian American communityFocus on work in Asia or the Asian American communityFocus Areas & Funding Uses
