Overview

Since 1966, Camphill Foundation has provided more than $10 million in strategic grants and low-interest loans to Camphill communities. The Foundation supports projects aligned with three strategic granting priorities:

Strategic Funding Priorities

Capital Needs Grants & Loans

  • Providing "bricks and mortar" needed for growth and well-being of communities

  • Funding property acquisitions, new programs, and initiatives

  • Supporting construction and renovation of buildings, residential spaces, and workshops

  • Examples: facility construction, equipment purchases, infrastructure upgrades, solar panels, fire safety systems
  • Coworker Development Grants

  • Building and protecting distinctive qualities of Camphill's lifesharing communities

  • Strengthening coworker recruitment and retention

  • Supporting professional training and development

  • Examples: CPR/first aid training, anthroposophical elder care training, leadership development, recruitment campaigns
  • Capacity Building Grants

  • Increasing effectiveness of Camphill Communities and the movement in North America

  • Supporting strategic planning, leadership training, succession planning

  • Supporting regional communication and activities

  • Examples: administrative positions, marketing initiatives, website development, endowment campaigns
    • Eligibility

    • Applicants: Existing Camphill communities and affiliates only
    • Geographic Scope: Priority given to Camphill organizations in North America; special consideration afforded to communities in high-need areas worldwide (Russia, South Africa, India, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe)
    • Organizational Type: Camphill communities, lifesharing organizations, and affiliated entities

      Historical Grant Distribution

    • More than $3.1 million for property acquisitions and new programs
    • More than $2.2 million for construction and renovation
    • More than $1.3 million to support communities in high-need areas worldwide
    • More than $700,000 for coworker recruitment and fundraising programs

    Funding Source

    Grants are funded by donor appeals and the Camphill Foundation Annual Gala (held each May).

      What They Don't Fund

    • Organizations that are not existing Camphill communities or affiliates

    How to Apply

    Grant Application Process

    Application Deadline: Varies by fiscal year; typically November-December (check website for current year deadline)

    Two-Round Review Process:

  • Round One: Initial review and Board approval (January)

  • Round Two: Consultation and revision period (February-April); grants announced end of April
  • Required Application Materials

    1. Completed Grant Application Form
    - Available on website at camphillfoundation.org/apply-for-a-grant/
    - Download and save blank form to your computer before filling out
    - Do not fill out form in browser window

    2. Required Attachments:
    - Additional narrative or explanatory documents (with photos if available)
    - Project timeline including anticipated start and completion dates
    - Detailed project budget
    - Audited financial statements for last 2 years
    - Current fiscal year operating budget
    - Development/fundraising budget for last 3 years
    - Most recent Annual Report
    - List of Board of Directors and their affiliations
    - Any outstanding updates from previously awarded grants
    - Prior year grant progress reports (if applicable)

    Application Timeline Example (2019)

    • September 30: Prior year grant progress reports must be submitted to be eligible for new requests
    • November 4: Deadline for requests to be reviewed by Grant Review Committee
    • November-December: Clarifications and updates must be submitted upon request
    • January: Grant Review Committee reviews and makes recommendations to Board; Round One grants approved; applicants notified of decisions
    • February-April: Consultations regarding Round Two proposals; updates accepted through mid-April
    • End of April: Round Two grants announced

    Special Grant Categories (2021-2022)

    Two focused categories offered:

    1. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in North America
    - For North American communities offering training/workshops to increase DEI understanding and healing measures

    2. International Camphill Communities
    - For communities in economically-challenged areas
    - Supports: general operating costs, capital projects, capacity-building, coworker development, Covid-19 relief
