Overview

Boston Athenaeum Fellowships

Overview: The Boston Athenaeum offers several different fellowship programs to support research and scholarly work using the institution's collections and materials.

Geographic Scope: Available to U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, and Foreign Nationals with appropriate U.S. government documents.

Focus Areas: Research projects utilizing Boston Athenaeum special collections and materials. Joint Fellowship applicants may also include Congregational Library and Archive materials.

Eligibility:

  • U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, or Foreign Nationals with appropriate U.S. government documents

  • PhD holders, or those without PhD must arrange letter of recommendation from dissertation advisor or supervisor

  • Secondary school teachers must arrange two (2) letters of recommendation
  • Application Requirements:

  • Recommendations should be emailed directly to fellowships@bostonathenaeum.org

  • Subject line must contain applicant's full name

    Fellowship Application Process

    Required Materials:
    1. Completed application form including:
    - Full name and contact information (email, phone)
    - Permanent address
    - Immigration status (U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident, or Foreign National with appropriate documents)
    - Education background
    - Experience
    - Awards, honors, fellowships, and grants received
    - Publications and creative work
    - Title of project
    - Statement of purpose describing project, research plans, and goals
    - List of specific Athenaeum materials to be studied

    2. Letters of Recommendation:
    - PhD holders: N/A (not required)
    - Non-PhD applicants: One letter from dissertation advisor or supervisor
    - Secondary school teachers: Two (2) letters of recommendation
    - Recommendations emailed directly to fellowships@bostonathenaeum.org with subject line containing applicant's full name
