Overview

Bob Chavez Scholarship for the Arts

Overview: Named in honor of Manuel "Bob" Chavez of Cochiti Pueblo, who dedicated 50 years as a volunteer teaching art at St. Catherine's Indian School. The scholarship was established in 2018 by the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center to invest in Pueblo youth pursuing visual arts education.

Award Amount: $2,500 per student per semester (with matching funds from the Dume Wolverine Foundation); base award is $2,500 per student per year

Geographic Scope: New Mexico

Focus Areas: Visual arts and related fields including graphic design, photography, architecture, design, cinematic arts, and art history

Eligibility

Applicants must meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • Be a high school graduating senior from New Mexico, OR a current college student, OR a returning college student from New Mexico

  • Demonstrate interest in the study of visual arts or related field (graphic design, photography, architecture, design, cinematic arts, art history, etc.)

  • Be a member of, or affiliated with, a federally recognized Pueblo from the 19 Pueblo communities of New Mexico

  • Pueblo enrollment is not required, but Pueblo affiliation must be verified by a letter of support from a current tribal government official of the Pueblo community

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher

  • Plan to attend, or currently attending, a 2-year or 4-year public or private nonprofit college, university, or technical vocational school, part-time or full-time, in state or out of state

  • Maintain full-time enrollment and a GPA of 2.0 or above
  • Selection Criteria

    Recipients are selected based on:

  • Financial need

  • Essay addressing their purpose in pursuing arts

  • Grade point averages

  • Portfolio featuring their works of art
  • Administration

    Application Process

    Applicants will need to complete the application process with the Albuquerque Community Foundation (not directly with IPCC).

    Required Materials:

  • Essay addressing purpose in pursuing arts

  • Portfolio featuring works of art

  • Grade point average documentation

  • Letter of support from a current tribal government official verifying Pueblo affiliation (if not enrolled)

  • Proof of enrollment or affiliation with a federally recognized Pueblo from the 19 Pueblo communities of New Mexico
