Barrington Moore Memorial Award in Biological Science Grant

The Barrington Moore Memorial Award in Biological Science honors significant contributions to biological research that advances forestry practices. Open to both employed and retired nominees, it recognizes high-quality work in various ecological fields. Nominees are expected to have a strong publication record and evidence of funding acquisition. The award includes a $1,000 honorarium and travel expense coverage up to $500, presented at the SAF national convention, fostering continued innovation in forestry.

The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding achievement in biological research leading to the advancement of forestry. Biological research includes such fields as forest ecology, fire ecology, forest soil science, forest hydrology, forest wildlife or fish ecology, forest or tree physiology, forest genetics, forest pathology, forest entomology, forest carbon cycle science, and ecological aspects of managerial or quantitative fields like silviculture, agroforestry, or biometrics.
The award consists includes a $1,000 honorarium, one complimentary SAF convention registration, and up to $500 to offset travel expenses. The award is presented at the SAF national convention.

Eligibility

Nominees need not be members of the Society.It may be made to either employed or retired nominees.Nominees shall have completed work of the highest quality and demonstrated strict adherence to high professional standards.The nominee shall have a substantive history of publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and technical proceedings. Evidence of the ability to acquire substantive funding from a variety of sources to pursue their research is required. Evidence of ability to organize symposiums and workshops and provide technology transfer to practitioners and researchers is required.Nominees shall have a history of innovative approaches to research and shall have demonstrated the ability to use a variety of research methodologies appropriate to their discipline.As a direct result of their research activities, nominees shall have affected significantly the course of subsequent research or the manner in which forestry and associated activities are practiced. Their research must result in a clear advancement in forestry.The nominee’s activities must include a significant component of distinguished individual research. Beyond merely being distinguished, this research must be relevant both nationally and internationally.

Ineligibility

The award will not be made posthumously.Nominees shall not have won any other SAF national science awards within five years of this nomination. Nominees without a strong biological focus in their careers may be more appropriate for the Forest Science Award, which recognizes accomplishments in quantitative, economic, managerial, or societal fields.
