B. T. Prince, Jr. Award

Overview: An award for individuals who have retired or are retiring from the coal industry and have demonstrated continuing service to the industry and The Coal Institute throughout their careers.

Background: Not intended to be an annual award; presented only as suitable nominees become eligible. Recognizes commitment to continuing education for membership.

Presentation: Award presented in conjunction with the annual Education and Engineering Seminar

Eligibility:

  • Individuals retired or retiring from the coal industry

  • Demonstrated continuing service to the industry and The Coal Institute

  • Recommended: Recipient should have served The Coal Institute as an Officer or Director and continued involvement in ongoing operations after term expiration
  • Geographic Scope: The Coal Institute membership (primarily US-based)

    Selection Process:

  • Nominees brought to attention of the President by any member in good standing

  • President consults with reasonable number of past Presidents regarding suitability

  • President presents nominee(s) to Executive Committee

  • Unanimous affirmative vote required from Executive Committee

  • Approved nominees presented to membership for final approval

    Nomination Process:
    1. Members in good standing bring potential nominees to the attention of the President
    2. President consults with a reasonable number of past Presidents regarding suitability of the nominee
    3. President presents nominee(s) to the Executive Committee
    4. Executive Committee must provide unanimous affirmative vote to approve
    5. Approved nominees presented to membership for final approval

    Selection Criteria:

  • Retired or retiring from the coal industry

  • Demonstrated continuing service to industry and The Coal Institute throughout career

  • Preference for candidates who served as Officer or Director and remained involved after term expiration
  • Note: This is not an annual award and is only presented when suitable nominees become eligible.
