Astronomer in Residence Program

Program Description: Grand Canyon Conservancy's Astronomer in Residence Program invites astronomers, scientists, educators, and communicators to live on-site at Grand Canyon National Park for 4-10 weeks to share knowledge about dark skies and astronomy with visitors through presentations, hands-on activities, constellation tours, and citizen science projects.

Geographic Scope: Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, US (International Dark Sky Park)

Focus Areas:

  • Dark sky conservation and education

  • Astronomy and space science communication

  • Light pollution awareness and advocacy

  • Celestial observation and interpretation

  • Connecting visitors to the night sky as a natural, cultural, and historic resource

  • Public engagement through astronomy talks, constellation tours, telescope viewing, and hands-on activities
  • What We Look For:

  • Experienced scientists, researchers, and/or educators enthusiastic about working with the public

  • Expertise in:

  • - Darkness and dark skies
    - Astronomy
    - Related fields of study
  • Dark sky advocacy background

  • Research experience

  • Demonstrable ability to engage the public effectively

  • Both amateur and professional astronomers welcome

  • Applications open annually from May - July

  • Submit through application portal: Call for Entry (Creative West)
  • Application Materials Required:
    1. CV and/or Statement - Professional background and credentials
    2. Documentation of Previous Public Programs - Evidence of public engagement experience:
    - Videos
    - Photos
    - Program descriptions
    3. Three Proposed Program Descriptions - Brief descriptions of three programs you will produce while on site, including:
    - Program topic and content
    - Target audience
    - Educational goals
    - Hands-on activities or interactive components (if applicable)

    Application Support:

  • Residency Program staff offer one to two information sessions to support astronomers with their proposals

  • Information session dates for 2026 have not yet been announced

  • Calls are announced through mailing list, website, and social media
