Overview: Award recognizing extension educators for significant contributions to enology or viticulture through extension programs and applied research.

Award Recognition

• Given to current ASEV member and extension educator
• Honoree presents keynote lecture at ASEV National Conference
• Based on contributions to enology or viticulture through extension program or translation of novel research findings into commercially applicable tools

2024 Recipient

Mark Battany, Farm Advisor with University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources
• Hired in 2001 as viticulture farm advisor for San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties
• Changed title to water management and biometeorology advisor in 2018
• Presentation topic: "Flipping dimensions: A vertical weather view helps illuminate vineyard challenges"
• Research areas: vine mealybug, soil salinity, vine nutrition, irrigation management, frost protection, weather station technology

2023 Recipient

Dr. Anna Katharine Mansfield, Associate Director of Cornell AgriTech and Associate Professor of Enology at Cornell University
• First enologist hired by University of Minnesota
• Created enology extension program for northern winemakers working with cold-hardy winegrapes
• Focus on DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) initiatives
• Presentation topic: "Would You Rather Be Right or Kind? The Ideal vs. the Real in Enology Extension"
• Research interests: tannin extraction in red wines, color stability of anthocyanins, protein effects on sparkling wine foam, regional wine identity
