Overview

APsA Fellowship

Status: Application portal closed; will reopen October 2026

Purpose: An early-career initiative aimed at future leaders and educators in fields of academia, mental health, psychiatry, psychology, social work, nurse practitioners, and multidisciplinary endeavors. Offers a unique opportunity to gain knowledge about psychoanalysis and engage with local and national psychoanalytic communities.

Geographic Scope: United States only (applicants must be training or working in the United States during the fellowship year)

Eligibility:

  • Not eligible: Psychoanalytic Candidates (due to their ready access to mentors and scientific activities at local and national levels)

  • Nomination: Applicants may be nominated by department chairs, program directors, or APsA members; self-nominations encouraged

  • Reapplication: Permitted

  • Requirements by field:

  • - Psychiatry: Full-time general or child psychiatry residents (PGY-2 or higher), fellows, or psychiatrists board-eligible within previous 3 years; must hold at least half-time academic appointments with training, leadership, or research responsibilities
    - Psychology: Minimum half-time position with academic department or clinical training program with training, leadership, or research responsibilities; if predoctoral, must have completed coursework and be in/beyond predoctoral internship; if postdoctoral, must have doctoral degree or completed postdoctoral fellowship within past 5 years
    - Social Work: M.S.W. or doctoral degree received within last 5 years; if enrolled in D.S.W./Ph.D., must have M.S.W. within last 10 years and begun advanced degree within 5 years of M.S.W.; must have at least part-time appointment with academic department, position in training/leadership/public policy/research, or interdisciplinary position
    - Academic and Multidisciplinary: From academia or non-mental health professions (humanities, social sciences, neuroscience, medicine, law, theology, journalism, arts); must demonstrate serious ongoing interest in psychoanalysis; must work in position influencing others through education, writing, public speaking, research, organizational leadership, performance, or artistic installations; no more than 8 years postdoctoral or nearing completion of degree if predoctoral

    Selection Criteria: Nominees must demonstrate leadership ability in their discipline with special aptitude in research, teaching, writing, or clinical endeavors, along with interest in psychodynamics, psychoanalysis, or applied psychoanalysis. Applications must demonstrate how nominee's interest in the mind has developed and how it will be directed in their field in the future.
