Overview:
The NCVMA offers a one-time grant of up to $2,500 to help NC animal shelters make improvements and remain compliant with the NC Department of Agriculture + Consumer Services' inspection guidelines.

Eligibility Requirements

• NC-licensed animal shelter facilities
• Must have a NC-licensed shelter veterinarian of record

Allowable Use of Funds

• Repair of animal housing
• Facility upgrades that support animal welfare in the shelter

What Is Not Funded

• Personnel expenditures
• Medications

Award History

Total Since 2014: $174,113 awarded to North Carolina shelters

2024 Example: Lee County Animal Shelter received funds to repaint kennels and purchase a shade tent for outdoor dog yard

Review Process

• Grant proposals are reviewed by the NCVMA Animal Welfare Committee
• Awards based on financial and physical need
• Successful applicants notified by email or telephone after review
• Encouraged to submit before and after photos and completion reports within 30 days of receiving funds

How to Apply

1. Complete the online Animal Welfare Grant application
2. Be prepared with the following information:
   • Name and address of shelter facility
   • Name and contact information of shelter director, manager, or appropriate person
   • Primary telephone number, fax, and email address
   • NC-licensed shelter veterinarian of record information
   • Report detailing inadequacies of shelter facilities
   • Brief description of how grant monies will be utilized
   • Current fiscal year budget (including assets and liabilities)
   • Estimate of anticipated purchases and expenses (with supplier/contractor letterhead)
   • If other funding sources involved, include amount and source

Supporting Documentation

• Attached cost estimates must be on supplier/contractor letterhead to be considered for approval
• All supporting documents should be included with application
