Overview

Purpose To promote continuing education for any course of study by awarding scholarships for attendance at institutions of higher education to individuals who demonstrate financial need, academic achievement and desire. Background The Anderson J. Blevins and Thelma L. Hammond Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established in December 2007 in accordance with the wishes of Betty Blevins in memory of her husband, Anderson J. Blevins, and her mother, Thelma L. Hammond. Anderson J. Blevins was born in Narrows, Virginia in 1936. After completing time in military service, he entered an apprenticeship program as a millwright with the local 1402 in Hopewell. Attending both John Tyler Community College and Richmond Professional Institute, he initially worked as a millwright for Dupont and then at Phillip Morris until his retirement. Throughout his life, he was active in many civic and political organizations. Suffering from a physical disability, he gave generously to assist with children’s health care organizations. Born in 1907 in Keysville, Virginia, Thelma L. Hammond moved to Hopewell and became an instructor at the Tubize plant. An active member of the First Baptist Church of Hopewell and Patrick Copeland PTA, she served as a foster parent to many needy children. Because of her husband and mother’s willingness to help others, Mrs. Blevins felt that a scholarship to assist local students would be a fitting memorial to both of them. Criteria Scoring (5 Points) Letters of Recommendation(10 Points) Financial Need(10 Points) Academics(5 Points) Extracurricular Activities(10 Points) Statement & Essay Procedure The scholarship will be paid directly to the school for current year tuition, fees, books purchased through the institution attended, and on-campus dormitory and meal plan expenses. The scholarship committee will review and evaluate all applications and announce awards each spring. The committee will also review and revise the scholarship policy and criteria as necessary. SAI is an eligibility index number used to determine federal student aid and is generated from the completed FAFSA Application.Two Letters of Recommendation (Current) Failure to submit the online application with all documents attached to the application by the deadline will disqualify an applicant from consideration for the Anderson J. Blevins and Thelma L. Hammond Memorial Scholarship Endowment. The John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Committee reserves the right to interview applicants in the final stages of selection. The decision of the scholarship committee in all matters regarding scholarships is final. Canvassing a scholarship benefactor, any John Randolph Foundation trustee or employee shall result in immediate disqualification. Scholarship awards are subject to the availability of funds, meeting the criteria as outlined in the guidelines of the individual scholarship program and contingent upon acceptance and enrollment in an approved program. The scholarship program is available to students in the foundation’s entire service area, which includes Hopewell, Prince George, Chesterfield (south of 288 and east of Ironbridge Road), Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Fort Lee, Dinwiddie, Surry, Sussex, Charles City and Varina. Student interns working for John Randolph Foundation are eligible to apply;Scholarship Applicants MustBe attending or express an interest in attending college as a full-time or part-time undergraduate student (at least 6 hours per semester);Submit a completed John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Application ONLINE to include the required documents which must be uploaded with the application;Demonstrate financial need; andMust have a G.P.A. of 3.0 or better.
