AIA Seattle Emerging Professionals Travel Scholarship

Purpose: Seeks to expand the experience and leadership opportunities of young professionals, encourage cross-cultural dialogue in the profession, and share knowledge from architecture practice around the globe with members in the Puget Sound.

Award Amount: $5,000 grant

Geographic Scope: Pacific Northwest/Puget Sound region (AIA Seattle chapter)

Eligibility: Young/emerging professionals in architecture

Focus Areas:

  • Research travel for professional development

  • Cross-cultural dialogue

  • Knowledge sharing from global architecture practice

  • Public interest design and community engagement approaches

  • Sustainable design and innovation
  • Background: Based on available recipient information (2015-2017), recipients have conducted research on:

  • Micro-housing and innovative housing strategies internationally

  • Smart buildings and advanced building technologies

  • Public interest design and socially engaged architecture practices
  • Recipients Noted:

  • 2015: Garrett Reynolds, AIA (Mithun) - researched micro-apartments in New York, Stockholm, Oslo, Tokyo

  • 2016: Derik Eckhardt, AIA (ZGF) - researched smart buildings in Boston, Amsterdam, London, Abu Dhabi, Portland

  • 2017: Garrett Nelli, Assoc. AIA (NAC Architecture) - researched public interest design in Los Angeles, New Orleans, rural Alabama, Haiti, Burkina Faso, Italy
