Advancing Young Women in STEM (AYWiSTEM) Scholarship

NMOST's AYWiSTEM Scholarship supports young women in New Mexico pursuing STEM education and careers.

Geographic Scope: New Mexico

Focus Areas:

• STEM education and career pathways for young women
• Support for high school graduates entering college STEM programs
• Recognition of academic achievement and leadership in STEM fields

Eligibility:

• Young women in New Mexico
• High school seniors/graduates
• Demonstrable interest and achievement in STEM
• Application requires responses to questions about:
  • Personal leaders/mentors in STEM
  • Experiences feeling welcome and included in STEM activities

Key Information:

• Recipients are selected annually
• Recent cohorts have included 12 scholarship recipients
• Past recipients have pursued degrees in:
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Forensic Science
  • Materials Science (internships at Sandia National Laboratories)

Application Questions:

• Describe a circumstance in which you were made to feel more welcome and included in a STEM activity or program

Application Process

Required Materials:

• Application form with responses to scholarship questions
• Personal narrative about STEM mentorship
• Description of experiences in STEM programs

Application Questions:

1. Tell us about a personal leader/mentor in STEM that you look up to. Describe how they inspire you, encourage you, and have fostered your interest in STEM.
2. Describe a circumstance in which you were made to feel more welcome and included in a STEM activity or program. What was it that made you continue in the program?
