Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) Program

Overview:
The Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) program is funded by a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission and provides free classes to eligible individuals. AEL provides opportunities for students to acquire the skills needed to enter the workforce, earn a high school equivalency, enter college, and begin training for a career.

Current course offerings include:

General Education Development (GED)

  • GED high school equivalency exam preparation

  • Four parts: Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science, Social Studies
  • English Programs

  • English as a Second Language (ESL) at various language proficiency levels

  • English for Professionals

  • TOEFL Test Preparation
  • Healthcare Certifications

  • Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)

  • Certified Medication Aide (CMA)

  • Education Paraprofessional Certificate
  • Manufacturing Certifications

  • Certified Logistics Technician (CLT)

  • Certified Production Technician (CPT)
  • College and Career Preparation

  • Workforce Readiness

    • Eligibility Requirements

      Student Eligibility:
    • At least 16 years old
    • Do not have a high school diploma or equivalent, OR
    • Need to improve English or basic skills
    • Must be legally present in the United States
    • Eligible individuals include: U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, asylees, and certain other legally admitted non-citizens
    • Eligibility documentation may be required

    How to Apply

    Enrollment Instructions

    1. Complete Enrollment Paperwork on Connectable
    - Access Connectable online
    - Complete all required enrollment forms

    2. Attend Orientation
    - Orientation sessions held monthly
    - Required before starting classes

    3. Start Classes
    - New classes begin every four weeks

    Youth Enrollment Requirements (Ages 16-18)

    Students Age 16:
    Must provide all of the following:

  • Official court order or letter from a probation officer (mandated by Texas Law)

  • Official withdrawal from the last school attended

  • Parent signature on student enrollment form (available at the AEL office)
  • Students Age 17-18:
    Must provide all of the following:

  • Official withdrawal from the last school attended

  • If home-schooled: letter from a parent stating they attended homeschool

  • Parent signature on the student enrollment form (available at the AEL office)

  • If participant no longer lives with parent/guardian: proof of separate residence (utility bill in their name, marriage license, or rental agreement) OR attestation of homelessness (enrollment or admittance form from homeless shelter)
    • Additional Requirements

    • All enrollment forms for students 18 years and younger must be signed and dated by parent/guardian in INK
    • Students without proper and completed paperwork will NOT be permitted to participate
    • Contact AEL for assistance in determining eligibility
