Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER) Program Grant

The Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER) Program, administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, addresses abandoned mine lands in Appalachia. This initiative provides crucial funding for reclamation efforts that promote both environmental restoration and local economic development. Since 2017, Ohio has received over $100 million to revitalize communities affected by mining. The program targets areas with significant unfunded AML issues, fostering sustainable growth and enhancing community well-being.

The Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER) Program, formerly known as the AML Pilot Program, was established by Congress through the Consolidated Appropriations Act and is administered by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE). The program provides funding for the reclamation of abandoned mine lands (AML) in ways that support economic and community development.
The AMLER Program targets the six Appalachian states and three Tribes with the most significant unfunded AML issues. These grants support projects that combine mine land reclamation with local economic revitalization efforts. Ohio has recived annual AMLER funding since 2017 totaling more than $100 million.
