AACPDM Mentored Research Grant

Award Amount: $15,000

Purpose: Support high-quality clinical research projects/programs related to childhood-onset disabilities and cerebral palsy. The award may be used to fund planning for a project or to complete a small research project.

Mission Alignment: Research grant funding supports the AACPDM mission to foster innovative research and its dissemination and implementation. Grants provide support to bring together investigators from diverse geographical locations to obtain pilot data, statistical consultation, and develop multi-center research study plans.

Eligibility

Principal Investigator (PI/Mentee) Requirements:

  • Must be an AACPDM member in good standing

  • Must have either:

  • - A research degree (PhD or equivalent); OR
    - A clinical degree and license to practice in the field of developmental disabilities in their local region (but would benefit from research mentorship)
  • Examples of potential PIs include:

  • - Early career faculty with a research degree (PhD or equivalent)
    - PhD students who have completed a clinical degree (must demonstrate approval from mentor and dissertation committee)
    - Post-doctoral fellows and researchers
    - Full-time clinicians with research mentorship
  • Must NOT have successfully competed for a federal or non-institutional grant of more than $50,000 in direct costs per year (exclusive of start-up package)

  • Must have an identified environment and mentor that will support and guide training opportunities in childhood onset disabilities

  • International applicants eligible if they meet other criteria

  • Only one grant application per member per budget year
  • Funding Details

    • Funding Period: October 1 - September 30 (12 months)
    • No Indirect Costs (F&A): Not allowed in budget
    • Human Subjects Approvals: Must be obtained within 6 months of project start
    • No Cost Extensions: Must be approved before end of budget period
    • Delays: Not allowed in grant start date
    • Reporting: 6-month interim and final progress reports required

  • AACPDM Review of Scores: June/July 2026

  • Grant Award Announcement: August 2026

  • Funds Released: October 2026
  • Submission Method:
    1. Submit application within the AACPDM website (online portal)
    2. Application form saves information for later completion
    3. You will NOT be able to edit application after submission
    4. Upon submission, you will receive a confirmation email
    5. If confirmation email not received, contact info@aacpdm.org to confirm successful submission

    Required Materials:

    1. Research Plan - Following NIH grant structure
    2. Mentoring/Training Plan Statement - 1-page document describing:
    - Alignment with the project
    - Alignment with career goals
    - Training and mentoring support available
    - Applications without training plan will NOT be considered
    3. Budget - No indirect costs (F&A) allowed
    4. Completed Application Template - Structure documents according to template outline (template available on website)

    Evaluation Criteria:

    Grant applications reviewed and scored by 2-3 reviewers from AACPDM research committee using NIH grant scoring criteria:

    1. Importance of the Research (Significance and Innovation) - Scored 1-9 scale
    2. Rigor and Feasibility (Approach) - Scored 1-9 scale
    3. Expertise and Resources (Investigators and Environment) - Appropriate/Not appropriate
    4. Budget - Appropriate/Not appropriate
    5. Overall Impact - Scored 1-9 scale
    6. Training and Mentoring Plan - Separately evaluated as key component (mentored grants only)
