A. Eric Arctander Artist Grant

Overview: This grant supports visual artists and was created by family and friends to honor A. Eric Arctander, a renowned visual artist, teacher, mentor, and advocate for younger artists pursuing careers in art.

About A. Eric Arctander: He was widely exhibited as a painter and creator of site-specific public art (recipient of Municipal Art Society Certificate of Merit). He was co-founder and President of Collaborative Concepts, a not-for-profit organization facilitating exhibitions since 2000. He initiated the Program for Advanced Environmental Art for college-level art students. He served as Professor of Art History at Pratt Institute for 15+ years and faculty at School of Visual Arts for 25+ years, publishing numerous articles and critical catalog essays on advanced art.

Geographic Scope: Residents of Dutchess, Westchester, or Putnam County in New York State

Focus Areas: Visual art including Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Mixed Media (2D and 3D), Installation Art, and Sculpture

Eligibility:

  • Must be a visual artist aged 25-45 years old

  • Involved with one or more of: Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Mixed Media (2D & 3D), Installation Art, Sculpture

  • Must be a resident of Dutchess, Westchester, or Putnam County in New York State

  • Must have an email address

  • Work must have been created within the specified timeframe (e.g., 2014-2019 for 2019 grant)
  • Award Details:

  • Stipend: $1,000

  • Work of selected artist will be shown at the discretion of Putnam Arts Council at Belle Levine Arts Center, Mahopac, NY

  • Award subject to verification of information and proof of residency

  • Sample of artist's work will be requested and included in a fall show at Putnam Arts Council
  • Evaluation Criteria:

  • Artistic merit based on quality of work submitted

  • Applicant's written intent to expand artistic development

  • Selection decided by panel of arts professionals

  • All materials and selection process information kept confidential

  • Applications not meeting submission guidelines will be rendered ineligible
  • Award Timeline: Decisions emailed approximately one month after deadline; award disbursed by August 15th

    1. Personal Artist Statement
    - 400 words or less

    2. Purpose Statement
    - Describe how the scholarship will advance your development in the arts

    3. Professional Background Summary
    - One-page summary of professional and educational art background

    4. Work Samples - Five (5) Images
    - Specifications:
    - Image size: Maximum 1240 pixels x 1240 pixels
    - Resolution: 300 dpi
    - File size: No larger than 4 MB each
    - Format: JPG or JPEG only
    - For each image, list:
    - Size
    - Medium
    - Title

    5. Website Documentation
    - Include website link with additional artwork and documentation of work

    Post-Selection Requirements:

  • Upon selection, winner must submit:

  • - Valid Social Security number
    - Proof of age
    - Proof of residency

    Submission Notes:

  • Only entries through the website will be considered

  • Panelists evaluate work based on materials submitted

  • Poor quality submission materials could affect panel evaluation

  • Website with additional artwork is supplemental only to required images
