The foundation’s stated grant purposes include historic preservation, primarily architectural preservation; native wildlife rehabilitation and appreciation; and arts, culture, and the humanities, with an emphasis on theater, photography, and literary arts. Its filing says an important element of all grants is public benefit, and that awards are limited to tax-exempt nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations and government agencies.

For historic preservation, the foundation identifies preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, and reconstruction of historic buildings, structures, and related sites as areas of interest. Its wildlife focus is native wildlife; the website says rehabilitation support is almost exclusively limited to nonprofits managed by state- and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitators. The Betty Kinsman Fund supports literary arts, theater, and photography. The foundation says it prioritizes smaller organizations and companies, and in larger urban areas, alternate or secondary ones. It also states that approximately 10% of annual grants support “Other” interests initiated by the Foundation in line with its current directors’ interests.

Grantees’ own descriptions illustrate the range of organizations funded. Restore Oregon says its mission is to empower Oregonians through preservation and reuse of historic and cultural places. Literary Arts says it engages readers, supports writers, and inspires the next generation with literature. Old Church Society says it produces and supports programs that enhance community cultural life and preserves and celebrates its building’s historic architecture. The Oaks Park Association describes its work as operating a public park and recreation facility, preserving historic sites, and providing for the general welfare.
