Gitta M. Kurlat (1941–2014) was a prominent lawyer and entrepreneur who shaped the foundation's direction. She earned a B.S. and B.A. from George Washington University and Boston University School of Management (1963), a J.D. cum laude from Boston University School of Law (1965), and an L.L.M. from Harvard University (1966). She worked as an instructor and research assistant at Boston University Law School (1966–1967) before joining the law firm Guterman, Horvitz, Rubin and Rudman as an associate, eventually becoming a partner specializing in corporate SEC mergers and acquisitions. In 1968, she co-founded Eikonix Corporation, a digital imaging and technology company, which was sold to Eastman Kodak in 1985. She subsequently founded Kurlat Associates and Kurlat Ventures in Cambridge.
