Mission & Focus Areas
Mission: The Conservancy preserves and revitalizes New York's architecture. By doing so, it contributes to New York's economy, tourism, and quality of life.
The organization operates through several key program areas:
Sacred Sites Program — Helps congregations throughout New York maintain, repair, and restore their historic buildings through referrals, grants, workshops, and publications. Launched in 1986, the program has awarded 1,695 grants to over 867 congregations and is one of the only statewide programs in the nation responding to the preservation needs of historic religious properties.
New York City Historic Properties Fund — Established in 1982, this is the Conservancy's main financing vehicle for restoration work throughout New York City. With nearly $10 million in assets, it is one of the largest revolving loan funds for historic preservation in the nation. Since inception, the fund has made over $33 million in investments.
Public Policy Program — Advocates to protect and celebrate the buildings, streetscapes, and neighborhoods that define New York, supporting landmark designations and speaking out on proposals affecting landmarked buildings.
Grantmaking
Since its founding in 1973, the Conservancy has loaned or granted nearly $53 million to help people save their homes and communities, including cultural, religious, and social institutions. These grants and loans have mobilized over $1 billion in more than 2,000 renovation projects throughout New York.
