Land is Life Inc

Land is Life’s mission is to advance dialogue and strategic action to achieve legal recognition and respect for Indigenous Peoples’ rights to self-determination and collective ownership of their territories, lands, resources, and knowledge.

Its stated priorities include strengthening Indigenous governance and territorial management; supporting community mapping, territorial demarcation, and locally led economies; and advancing climate change response and biodiversity conservation. Its Indigenous-Led Grantmaking Initiative offers small, flexible funds for grassroots Indigenous leaders, communities, and organizations. Listed focus areas include collective rights, human rights, land and resources, biodiversity, climate change, food sovereignty, women, youth and elders, traditional knowledge, education, economic empowerment, and Indigenous livelihoods.

Land is Life’s Indigenous Women’s Program supports Indigenous women and their organizations in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. The program describes its support as including core funding, technical and fundraising assistance, capacity building, and support for participation in international policy processes.

A grantee listed by Land is Life, the Gwich’in Steering Committee, received $35,000 in 2021. The committee describes its mission as protecting the long-term health and viability of the Porcupine caribou herd, which sustains the Gwich’in way of life.

Land is Life describes its work as global, spanning Indigenous Peoples’ communities in the world’s seven sociocultural regions. The Indigenous-Led Grantmaking Initiative lists regional pilots in the North American Arctic, Africa, Asia, Mesoamerica, South America, and the Pacific.
