The Gilbert Family Foundation is driven by the belief that major change is possible when working together. The foundation operates two distinct funding streams:

Curing Neurofibromatosis (NF)

The foundation supports cutting-edge NF research through several initiatives:

• Gene Therapy Initiative (GTI) – Develops curative therapies addressing the underlying genetic abnormalities in NF1 patients
• Vision Restoration Initiative (VRI) – Advances vision restoration therapies, inspired by their son's loss of vision from NF1
• Next-Generation Research Models – Develops advanced disease models to accelerate cure research
• Brain Tumor Initiative – Focuses on NF-related brain tumor research

Building Opportunity

The foundation is committed to investing in projects that break down long-standing barriers and create opportunities for Detroiters. The strategy focuses on three key areas:

• Housing Stability – Addressing Detroit's tax foreclosure crisis and streamlining access to home repair funding to provide safe and stable housing
• Economic Mobility – Investing in programs and partnerships that provide Detroit residents and small businesses with opportunities to build economic prosperity
• Community-Wide Investments – Supporting public spaces and arts & culture that strengthen social bonds
