Youth Journalism & Multimedia Fellowship

Program Type: Fellowship for high school students

Overview: Afro Charities launched its inaugural Journalism and Multimedia Fellowship program in 2022 for Baltimore City high school students. The program encourages students to research and analyze the AFRO American Newspapers' archival collection and create new work inspired by it.

Eligibility:

  • Baltimore City high school students

  • Application required
  • Activities:

  • Research AFRO American Newspapers archives

  • Create written work, new media (audio/video), visual art, and/or performance art

  • Recount and reinterpret Baltimore history
  • Benefits:

  • Stipend: Participants receive stipends for participation

  • Publication: Select students' work published in the AFRO and worldwide distribution platforms
  • Pilot Program Details (2022):

  • Partnered with Leaders of Tomorrow Youth Center

  • 15 students from Baltimore's Coppin Academy (spring semester)
  • Funding Partners: Bainum Family Foundation, The Reginald F. Lewis Foundation, Greater Washington Community Foundation
