Overview

West Virginia Humanities Council The West Virginia Humanities Council offers a variety of matching grants to nonprofit organizations that provide public humanities programming for West Virginia audiences. What are the Humanities? The humanities represent a group of academic disciplines that have traditionally been concerned with values, ideas and choices. The humanities provide a framework for analyzing the human condition – for making sense of our roles in contemporary society. The term humanities includes the following: Language, both modern and classical; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, theory and criticism of the arts; those aspects of social sciences that have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods; and the study and application of the humanities to the human environment with particular attention to our diverse heritage, traditions and history and to the relevance of the humanities to the current condition of national life. Fellowships $3,000, support research and writing projects in the humanities for teachers, college faculty, and independent scholars. Fellowships support research and writing projects in the humanities for teachers, college faculty, and independent scholars. Fellowships do not support work leading toward a degree or fund routine preparations for teaching. No cost share is required; allow twelve weeks between the deadline and the start of the project. Purpose Fellowships were established to encourage and support in-depth research and writing within a humanities discipline. See About Our Grants for a definition of the humanities. Fellowships provide opportunities for individuals to pursue advanced study and research that will enhance their capacities as teachers, scholars, or interpreters of the humanities. Fellowships allow the individual to devote time to investigation, reflection, and writing. Criteria for Selection Applications for Fellowships will be judged on the following criteria: the conception, definition, and organization of the project;the significance of the proposal to a field of the humanities;the likelihood that the project will be completed as proposed.

Eligibility

Fellowships are open to West Virginia teachers, college faculty, and independent scholars who want to complete independent research projects. Collaborative research proposals will also be considered. To be eligible for a Fellowship, the applicant must:demonstrate evidence of interest and accomplishment in a field of the humanities;reside or be employed in West Virginia;not have received a West Virginia Humanities Council Fellowship grant within the preceding two years;not be seeking support for work leading toward a degree or to fund routine preparations for teaching.The applicant must propose a project or a portion of an extended project that can be completed during the Fellowship period.

Ineligibility

Fellowships are awarded in support of research costs and should not be sought for publishing costs associated with a completed project.
