Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Adult and Dislocated Worker Programs

Geographic Scope: Henderson County and Transylvania County, North Carolina

Grant Term: July 1 to June 30

Eligibility:

  • Dislocated workers

  • Unemployed individuals

  • Underemployed adults
  • Eligible Programs:

  • Curriculum and continuing education programs approved by Mountain Area Workforce Development Board
  • Award Amount:

  • Generally $6,000 for long-term curriculum degree

  • $500 for short-term continuing education

  • Typically includes tuition/registration and textbooks
  • Purpose: Provide short-term and long-term training, upgrade of skills and credentials for qualifying individuals seeking full-time employment upon completion of training

  • How to Apply

    Application Process for WIOA Funding

    1. Register at the front desk of Henderson County or Transylvania County NCWorks Center at Blue Ridge Community College
    2. Enroll and complete placement tests - Be enrolled in ACT Workkeys Curriculum training and complete three placement tests in the NCWorks Center Employability Lab:
    - Applied Math
    - Locating Information
    - Reading for Information
    3. Complete and print the CFNC.org assessment webpage
    4. Meet with NCWorks Career Center Counselor and bring CFNC.org printout. Call (828) 694-1755 or (828) 883-2550
    5. Complete placement tests (varies by enrollment type)
    6. Meet with Program Coordinator for desired program to discuss program details and job prospects. Sign up for Blue Ridge Community College Placement Test
    7. Apply for college (curriculum students only) - Complete college application and obtain required transcripts/documents. Not required for short-term training
    8. Apply for FAFSA (curriculum students only) - Complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid at FAFSA.org. Not required for short-term training
    9. Collect documents - Gather all required documentation to determine eligibility, including CFNC.org assessment printout and ACT Workkeys placement scores. Curriculum students must also submit class schedule for upcoming semester
    10. Submit at NCWorks Career Center front desk:
    - Completed WIOA pre-application
    - All gathered documentation
    11. Make appointment with W.I.O.A. Counselor at NC Works Career Center. Contact Jason Chappell at (828) 694-1755 or jasonc@blueridge.edu
    12. If approved - Be entered into the W.I.O.A. database and sign releases/paperwork
    13. Receive voucher - Be issued voucher to pay cashier and bookstore
    14. Start classes
