Overview

WIGA Scholarship Program

Overview: The Washington Indian Gaming Association (WIGA) Scholarship Program provides scholarships to Native American and Alaska Native students pursuing opportunities in higher education.

Award Amount: Awards generally range from $1,500 to $3,000 per academic year. The WIGA Scholarship Committee has discretion in determining the amount of each award and the total number of recipients, depending on the availability of funds and the pool of applicants each year.

Program History: Since its inception, the WIGA Scholarship Program has awarded more than $1.1 million in scholarships. In the 2025-26 academic year alone, the program awarded more than $160,000 to 63 students.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be:

  • Enrolled members of one of Washington's 29 federally recognized tribes, OR

  • American Indian/Alaska Native students enrolled in a federally recognized tribe

  • Attending or planning to attend a higher education institution in the state of Washington

  • May be pursuing degrees at:

  • - Community and technical colleges
    - Four-year colleges
    - Post-graduate and professional schools

    Previous Recipients: Scholarship recipients from the previous year are eligible to re-apply under a reduced format if they:

  • Have maintained a 2.5 GPA or higher

  • Are continuing at their current level of study
  • Award Distribution

    • Notification: Scholarship recipients will be notified by email in May 2026
    • Payment Distribution: Checks will be distributed in August 2026
    • Payment Method: Payments will be made either:
    • - Directly to the student, OR - To the financial aid office of the institution the recipient is attending, in the name of the student
    • Proof of Enrollment Required: All new scholarship recipients must provide proof of class enrollment before checks will be distributed

    Application Deadline: Applications must be submitted by March 31, 2026. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

    Application Requirements for First-Time Applicants

    1. Applicant Information:

    - Tribal affiliation
    - Membership/Enrollment number
    - Proof of tribal enrollment (required):
    - Copy of tribal enrollment card, OR
    - Statement from Tribal Enrollment Officer
    - Max file size: 50 MB

    3. Current Educational Plan:
    - Academic institution you will attend (or two most likely options if unsure)
    - Class level for next fall:
    - Associates - First year
    - Associates - Second year
    - Bachelors - Freshmen
    - Bachelors - Sophomore
    - Bachelors - Junior
    - Bachelors - Senior
    - Graduate
    - Postgraduate
    - College mailing address
    - Intended field of study
    - Date expected for program completion

    4. Educational Background:
    - Date of high school graduation or GED received
    - List all schools attended in order (most recent first):
    - School/Institution name
    - City/State
    - Dates of attendance
    - Degree, if any
    - Cumulative GPA
    - Transcript or GED Certification (required):
    - Upload most recent unofficial transcripts or GED certification
    - Alternative: Mail separately - must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2026
    - Max file size: 50 MB

    5. Extracurricular Activities:
    - List honors, awards, elected positions, volunteer or work experience in order of importance
    - Minimum of 3 activities required
    - Include position and year for each
    - Completeness strengthens review by scholarship committee

    6. Letters of Recommendation:
    - Two letters required (written by someone not related to you)
    - Can be from:
    - Teacher
    - Counselor
    - Community leader
    - Tribal leader
    - Other professionals
    - Alternative: Mail separately - must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2026
    - Max file size: 50 MB per letter

    7. Personal Essay:
    - Two topic options (choose one):
    - "Why are you considering your intended major and how will it help you reach future career objectives? How will your education benefit your Tribal community, whether urban or rural?"
    - Approximately 250-500 words
    - Very important part of application
    - Applicants should be as specific as possible about academic and professional interests

    8. Statement of Need:
    - Helps scholarship committee understand anticipated financial situation
    - Income information:
    - Student income - all sources
    - Scholarships (combined total)
    - Student loans (combined total)
    - Grants (combined total)
    - Tribal contribution
    - All other income sources
    - Educational Expenditures:
    - Tuition
    - Books
    - Housing
    - Miscellaneous
    - Form automatically calculates:
    - Total Income
    - Total Educational Expenditures
    - Total Unmet Need

    9. Tribe's Educational Assistance Policy:
    - Attach a copy of your Tribe's Educational Assistance Policy
    - Alternative: Mail separately - must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2026
    - Not required for renewal applicants

    Renewal Application Requirements

    Eligibility for Reduced Format:

  • Must have received WIGA scholarship in 2025-26

  • Must be continuing at current level of study

  • Must have maintained 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Reduced Format Requirements:

  • Copy of tribal ID: NOT required

  • Tribe's education policy: NOT required

  • Two letters of recommendation: OPTIONAL

  • Section VI: 250-word statement of progress (instead of full personal essay)
  • Full Application Required If:

  • Received WIGA scholarship in 2025-26 but moving into a new degree program

  • Example: Completed undergraduate last year, now pursuing Master's degree
