Program Type: Audio-essay scholarship program for high school students

Overview:
Established in 1947, the Voice of Democracy® program provides high school students with the opportunity to express themselves through a recorded essay on a patriotic and democratic theme.

Award Details:

National Awards: Over $1.4 million in educational scholarships awarded annually

National First Place: $35,000 scholarship paid directly to recipient's university, college, or vocational/technical school

National Scholarships: Range from $1,000 - $21,000

State Level: First place winner from each VFW Department (state) wins at least $1,000

Eligibility:

High school students in grades 9-12

Must participate through a local VFW Post

2025-2026 Theme: "How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?"

Geographic Scope: National program with state (MA) awards available

Participation: More than 26,400 students nationwide participate annually
