Virginians Speak Up for Safety Awards

Overview: A statewide recognition initiative launched in 2017 by the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association designed to acknowledge the efforts of individuals and teams within Virginia hospitals who speak-up to prevent potential harm to patients or other staff members.

Purpose: Recognizes employees who feel safe and empowered to speak up to peers and those in authority. The program supports organizations with positive safety cultures that value information as vital to achieving zero harm.

Geographic Scope: Virginia hospitals only

Key Statistics: Since inception in 2017, 938 nominations have been received

Award Selection Process:

  • Frequency: Two award winners selected each quarter

  • Presentation: VHHA representatives travel to each award recipient's hospital to present the award in front of their peers and leadership team
  • Eligibility:

  • Employees and teams within Virginia hospitals

  • Must demonstrate speaking up to prevent potential harm to patients or staff members
