Overview: This annual award honors Vembu Subramanian's legacy by supporting the next generation of ocean professionals through mentorship, networking, and meaningful engagement at SECOORA's Annual Meeting.

Background: Vembu Subramanian was SECOORA's beloved Data Manager who devoted his career to supporting networking and career development opportunities. In his memory, SECOORA established this scholarship to continue his impactful legacy of mentoring students and supporting career development.

Award Amount: $3,500 per award

Geographic Scope: Southeast US region (SECOORA member organizations)

Focus Areas: Research relevant to SECOORA focus areas in coastal ocean science

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate students

  • Graduate students

  • Early career professionals

  • Must be studying or working at a SECOORA member organization
  • What the Award Supports:

  • Research support

  • Travel support to present at regional or national meetings/conferences

  • Mentorship and networking opportunities at SECOORA Annual Meeting
  • Funding History: Since 2018, ten scholars have been awarded and have showcased their work at conferences. The award was initially established with a goal of $50,000 to create an annual scholarship of approximately $2,500 in perpetuity. The award value increased to $3,500 as of 2019 through generous donor contributions.
