Summary

The Truman Library Institute offers the Scholar's Award, providing $30,000 to established post-doctoral scholars researching aspects of Harry S. Truman's life or significant public and foreign policy issues from his presidency. This award, aimed at freeing scholars from teaching duties, is contingent on quality proposals and available funding. The Institute, founded by Truman, enriches public understanding of democracy and history through various educational initiatives and intends to offer the award biennially.

Overview

The Truman Library Institute is the member-supported, nonprofit partner of the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum, one of 15 presidential libraries of the National Archives. Together with its federal partner, the Truman Library Institute draws on President Truman’s legacy to enrich the public understanding of history, the presidency and America’s unique form of government. This mission is achieved through world-class museum exhibits, research grants, public programming and nationally acclaimed education programs serving more than 30,000 students and teachers annually. The Institute was founded by President Truman himself in order to ensure that his presidential library flourish as a classroom for democracy, where young people, especially, might better understand the American presidency and the fundamental principles governing our democracy, while finding inspiration to choose lives of service and purpose. Scholar’s Award grants of $30,000 are made to established post-doctoral scholars engaged in work on some aspect of the life and career of Harry S. Truman or of the public and foreign policy issues which were prominent during the Truman years. The award is intended to free a senior scholar from teaching or other employment for a substantial period of time. The awarding of the Scholar’s Award is contingent upon the receipt of underwriting support and of strong proposals from applicants. If, in the opinion of the Institute’s Committee on Research, Scholarship and Education, the quality of available applications does not justify the making of an award in any given year, none will be made. When possible, the Institute intends to award a Scholar’s Award every other year, in even-numbered years. The Scholar’s Award will be payable in two $15,000 installments, July and January.
