Translation Grants

Mission: Enable suitably experienced translators to research and produce translations of texts from the Tibetan Buddhist Canon (Kangyur and Tengyur) into English, along with introductions, glossaries, and notes for editorial review.

• Total Awarded: Over 165 grants totaling more than US $8.5 million to over 60 translation groups worldwide
• Current Focus: Seeking experienced translators with specialized knowledge to translate remaining texts, particularly from the Tantra and Dhāraṇī sections of the Kangyur

Grant Funding Guidelines

• Amount: Approximately US $200-$250 per Degé-edition page (one side of a Tibetan folio in the Degé Kangyur)
• Budget Cap: Proposals exceeding this per-page amount will not be considered
• Applicants must provide budget estimates with their proposals

   • Title and Tohoku number of the text(s) you propose to translate
   • Full description of the text(s) you propose to translate
   • Planned start and completion dates
   • Grant amount you are requesting for your project
   • Curriculum Vitae (CV) of the main translator(s) (attached)
3. Review Process:
   • The Grants Committee reviews applications on a continuous basis
   • Committee will provide initial feedback shortly after submission
   • Further details and formal application process will be provided after initial review
4. Deliverables Expected:
   • Full translation of designated text
   • Introduction to the text
   • Glossary
   • Explanatory notes
   • Submission for editorial review by 84000 team
5. Post-Award Support:
   • Grant holders receive ongoing project-specific support from 84000's editorial team throughout the grant period
